Even the most meticulous brusher and flosser will notice that their tooth enamel begins to discolor over time. While excellent oral hygiene certainly can prevent cavities, gum disease and infections, it can't always keep teeth as white as you might like them to be. If you are interested in teeth whitening, we offer Zoom dentist services here at Allure Dentistry.
Zoom is a popular teeth whitening process that was developed by the Phillips corporation and it involves the use whitening gel as well as a special light which activates the whitening ingredients. As a Zoom dentist, I can attest that that Zoom is fast, pain-free and one of the most effective ways to whiten teeth.
Of course, before the teeth whitening process begins, your Zoom dentist will want to provide you with a comprehensive examination. It is important to first address any dental health issues before undergoing tooth whitening. Likewise, it also is essential to have a professional dental cleaning to remove excess plaque and tartar.
After we ensure that the teeth and gums are healthy and everything is clean and fresh, the teeth whitening can begin. Typically, the Zoom process takes about one hour. The first step includes covering the lips and gums so that only the teeth are exposed. Your Zoom dentist or perhaps a dental assistant will then coat the teeth with a hydrogen peroxide gel. After application, the teeth are exposed to a special LED light. The light will be on for 15 minutes and then gel is reapplied and the light is turned back on for 15 more minutes. This process will be repeated a third time for total time of about 45 minutes.
After the three gel and light treatments are complete, the Zoom dentist or assistant will apply a fluoride gel or paste to your teeth to reduce sensitivity. In some cases teeth whitening can increase tooth sensitivity, and the paste can alleviate this issue. Additionally, your Zoom dentist will send you home with a whitening kit and this kit will include whitening trays that are custom fitted to your teeth.
It is important to note that if you wish to maintain the effects of your teeth whitening, your Zoom dentist recommends that you limit exposure to foods and beverages that cause tooth discoloration. This includes coffee, tea and soda as well as red wine. In addition, smoking is one of the most prominent causes of tooth discoloration, and taking steps to quit smoking not only will help you improve the look of your teeth, but also your overall dental and physical health.
Not all of our patients are ideal candidates for teeth whitening. If you already have very sensitive teeth, for instance, teeth whitening might not be a good fit. Also if your discoloration was caused by something other than aging, food or beverages, we might need to address the discoloration in a different way. For instance, if you have a tooth discolored because of some type of dental trauma, we might consider using a veneer to cover that particular tooth as a Zoom dentist might not be able to whiten that damaged tooth.
If you are interested in learning more about Zoom teeth whitening, contact our offices and we can set up an initial appointment.
